(Quepos Excursions)
    11 Apr 2002

On our first day of class in Quepos we met Jesse. The crazy thing was we saw Jesse 4 days earlier in San Jose. We only passed each other in the park and said 'Buenas' (Good day - its short for Buenas dias). Scott and I just assumed she was another tica. Then the first day she recognized us. This was our first example of how small the country is. So far its happened with two other people. Jesse's tico family was planning a camping trip that weekend and she invited us to go along. It was one of the best experiences I had in Quepos. Her tico family was so welcoming and fun. They told lots of jokes and laughed a lot. That night we all sat around the campfire, and enjoyed each others company. They had a campfire not for warmth but to keep the bugs away.

We headed south to the mouth of a river just south of Manuel Antonio park which is the park close to Quepos. They had a pickup truck so we all piled in. But apparently it is illegal so they hired a cab for some of us till we got outside of city limits. Here's a picture of Scott and I enjoying the wind and some sand along the way because the road was not paved.

Fernando y Michael con sus langostos

When we got there we met Fernando and Michael who had been out fishing for lobsters. Here is a picture with them and their prizes. Now the interesting thing is the way they fish. They put weight belts on and go under water and wait for the fish. Then shoot them with these spear type things. I've heard the spear type things are illegal but ticos can do what they want :)

I also saw my first wild pineapple growing which I thought was pretty cool so I'm going to share it with ya all. Here it is.

Then at sunset Fernando took us across the mouth of the river to the southern most end of the Manuel Antonio park. We couldn't see the sunset because of a piece of land jutting out too far but it was still a fun walk for us. Here is a picture of us during the walk.
